How to pair Halloween candy with 9 different beers

Beer and candy may seem like an unlikely mix, but Yard House beverage manager Michael Echeveste doesn’t think so.

And we’re willing to believe some of you agree with him.

So Echeveste shared some beer and candy pairings that may have you digging through your kid’s trick-or-treat bag after they’ve fallen asleep.

1) Bazooka bubble gum and Weihenstephan Hefe Weissbier

Pop in a piece of gum and, when it begins to lose its flavor, take a sip of beer and your chew will be refreshed. This is due to the beer’s yeast strain that has a “natural bubble gumminess to it,” Echeveste said.

2) Charleston Chew and North Coast Brewing Old Rasputin

The beer is intense and rich with a creaminess reminiscent of vanilla nougat and the candy works against it, creating a softer taste.

3) Hot Tamales and Modelo

The extreme sweet and warm cinnamon flavor of the candy is calmed and complemented by the crisp and malty beer. Echeveste said that when you breathe out, it will taste just like autumn.

4) Milky Way Midnight and New Holland Dragon’s Milk

Echeveste likes this combination for its “pure decadence.” The candy’s nougat picks up this dark beer’s vanilla tones, while the sweet’s chocolate complements the sud’s hints of smoky, charred oak.

5) Pink Starburst and Angry Orchard Rosé Cider

The playfulness of this strawberry candy is elevated by the cider, polishing its taste while leaving you refreshed.

6) Reese’s Cups and Miller High Life

Echeveste believes that the most iconic candy deserves an equally important beer, plus “it’s the only way to finish your Halloween evening when your kids have gone to bed.”

7) Snickers and The Hemperor HPA by New Belgium

The peanuts in the candy pair perfectly with the natural nuttiness of the hemp seed and its chocolate coating complements the beer’s moderate maltiness.

8) Sour Patch Kids and Delirium Tremens

The extreme differences in flavor, the super sourness of the candy and the floral, warming taste of the beer, work in favor of each other. The brew cuts some of the candy’s sourness, while the candy brings out some of the beer’s sweetness for a perfect blend of both tastes.

9) Swedish Fish and Founders Brewing Co. Nitro Rubaeus

The concentrated fruit flavor of the candy is a nice balance for the raspberry taste of this tart ale and makes for a refreshing combination. Plus the nitro in the beer makes smaller bubbles, which are easier for drinking, especially when you are also eating.

The Yard House boasts that it has the world’s largest selection of draft beer with more than 110 brews on tap. Grab your favorite candy and find a location near you at www.yardhouse.com.
